GUNI is an international network created in 1999 by UNESCO, the United Nations University and the Polytechnic University of Cataluña – BarcelonaTech, in order to give greater continuity to the decisions and action plans resulting from the UNESCO World Conference on higher education in 1998. It is headquartered at the Polytechnic University of Cataluña in Barcelona, Spain.
The objectives of this international network include: encouraging institutions of higher education to refocus their activities and increase their value to society; assisting universities in adopting measures to strengthen their fundamental position within society; promoting the exchange of resources, ideas and innovative experiences to facilitate the transformation of higher education and society as a whole; creating networks among institutions of higher education and facilitating cooperation among universities and between universities and society at large; helping to close the gap between developed and developing countries in higher education and fostering North-South and South-South collaboration; promoting collective and cooperative thinking, exchanges and joint production of knowledge, particularly in relation to the role and social responsibility of higher education in the coming global era.
