The CRUCH is a legally constituted autonomous public body created on August 14th 1954 (Law Nº 11.575) to coordinate the work of universities at a national level.
The council is made up of the Rectors of the 25 traditional public universities in Chile. Over the past 50 years, the Council of Rectors has played a significant role in public and university life, making important contributions to the higher education sector such as the development of a common selection and admissions system for member universities through the University Selection Test (PSU), a mechanism that is unique in Latin America and has been in place since 1967.
Additionally, the Council of Rectors has contributed to the legal framework for higher education, through measures such as the “Law on Quality Assurance in Higher Education” (Ley Nº 20.129) and the establishment of the “Solidarity System for University Loans” (Ley Nº 19.287).
