General Description

This program aims to train scientists with a holistic, interdisciplinary vision, who are capable of not only researching and developing theoretical models, but also proposing creative and viable solutions to problems deriving from the use and transformation of renewable resources. The program seeks to train scientists with a strong focus on searching for practical solutions that benefit society and the environment.

The Doctoral Program in Biology and Applied Ecology is delivered jointly by the Universidad de La Serena (ULS) and the Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN), with the participation of the Center for Advanced Studies in Arid Zones (CEAZA) and the Intihuasi Institute of Agricultural and Fisheries Research (INIA Intihuasi).

Objectives

Vision: The program aims to train Doctoral candidates to be leaders in their field, capable of researching, developing and applying practical and innovative solutions oriented towards the sustainable use of renewable resources, as well as strengthening research within regional institutions.

Mission: Graduates of this program will be capable of integrating efficiently into the national and international academic system, within public or private institutions and organizations linked to the administration of natural resources. Graduates will provide concrete support to the advancement and application of knowledge and to the search for solutions in their area of specialization, contributing to regional and national growth.

Candidate Profile

The program is aimed towards professionals in the area of Biology and Ecology who aim to promote for the sustainable use of renewable marine and terrestrial resources. Candidates will be graduates of Biology, Marine Biology, Agronomy, Veterinary Studies and similar fields.

Plan of Studies

This is a face-to-face program with a duration of 8 academic semesters. It includes both obligatory and elective courses, the defense of a thesis proposal, the development of a thesis project and a final examination.

Prerequisites

Candidates should hold an Undergraduate Degree or equivalent academic or professional qualification.

Candidates must have submitted and passed their final thesis project. Those who do not fulfill this condition may enter the Master’s Program at ULS or UCN, and may be evaluated for admission to the doctoral program once they have completed the obligatory courses.

Applicants should submit:

  1. a) A letter of application to the program, outlining the candidate’s intentions for the future.
    b) Detailed CV.
    c) Notarized copies of Degree Certificates*.
    d) Notarized copies of transcripts of grades, including information on the grading system used*.
    e) Two confidential letters of recommendation from recognized academics, researchers or scientists, in closed envelopes.
    f) Certificate of health compatible with postgraduate study.
    g) Letter of acceptance from one member of the Program’s core faculty**.

Applicants should also:

  1. Sit an entrance examination.
  2. Attend a personal interview with the program’s Academic Committee.
  3. Demonstrate adequate knowledge of the English language, particularly reading comprehension.

* Foreign applicants may submit copies legalized at the Chilean Consulate of their country of origin.

** Prior to submitting an application, all applicants should contact one of the members of the program’s core faculty (according to their own areas of interest, see www.dr-bea.cl for staff research interests). This person should give written confirmation of their intention to receive the applicant in their laboratory and supervise their Thesis.

Observations: Program fee does not include general fees or cost of academic diploma.
