Duration

General Description

Specialists in Pediatrics are medical professionals with a strong theoretical, practical and ethical background, who help to resolve medical pathologies prevalent in Pediatrics in both ambulatory care settings and hospital environments, providing prompt and thorough care. Specialists will apply their skills in critical reasoning and reflective practice, as well as their strong ethical training. They will have a strong capacity for self-directed, ongoing learning, and will be able to integrate into and lead multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Pediatricians are capable of providing preventative care, diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation, supervising the growth and development of their patients from birth to adolescence. They work towards the common good, with a vision centered on the person and their environment, and are guided by ethical and Christian Humanist principals that call for the care of the physical and mental integrity of the patient.

Pediatricians are trained to address health problems in ambulatory and hospital care settings of different degrees of complexity. In order to do this, they use the clinical and/or scientific method and methodological tools from biomedical and social science and research, keeping their knowledge up-to-date by means of constant self-directed study.

These professionals are trained to carry out basic clinical research and to apply essential concepts for undergraduate-level teaching. Specialists in Pediatrics are able to lead healthcare teams, using health management tools and interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary in order to overcome challenges and achieve objectives. They will take into consideration the rational use of existing resources for prompt and high-quality care.

Pediatricians will relate to patients and their families with empathy and assertiveness, prioritizing their physical and emotional wellbeing and taking into account their sociocultural environment.

  • Diagnose common pathologies in pediatrics, taking into consideration the patient, their family and wider social environment, using the clinical method.
  • Formulate monitoring plans including laboratory examinations, medical imaging and other procedures that are cost-effective for the patient and the health service.

Plan of Studies

The first year of the program will focus on the resolution of general issues in Pediatrics.

The second year will incorporate an emphasis on sub-specializations.

The third year will consolidate a thorough and integrated approach to childhood and adolescent medical complaints.

This is a full-time program requiring complete dedication from residents, whose activities will be supervised throughout their course of study.
