Specialization in Gynecology and Obstetrics

Campus

Coquimbo

Duration

3 years

General Description

A Specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics is a doctor with a solid theoretical, practical and ethical training, who is able to contribute to resolving problems in gynecology and obstetrics whether in an ambulatory care or hospital environment, at different levels of complexity, including both elective and emergency procedures. Specialists work towards the common good, with a focus on the person and their environment, and are guided in their professional practice by ethical principles, solidarity and humanism, caring for their patients’ physical and mental integrity.

In the field of obstetrics, specialists carry out prenatal checks on women with normal pregnancies, detecting the most common obstetric pathologies and providing initial treatment, referring patients to tertiary level consultants in the case of more complex pathologies. They use the clinical and/or scientific method and methodological tools from biomedical and social sciences and research to aid in their decision-making, undertaking ongoing self-directed study.

In the field of gynecology, specialists will be trained to carry out regular checks on women who are not pregnant, carry out low-to-medium-complexity procedures and refer patients requiring more complex surgical intervention to sub-specialists.

Specialists trained at the Universidad Católica del Norte will be capable of leading maternal, perinatal and gynecological health teams, using health management tools, and working across disciplines to overcome challenges and achieve objectives. They will take into consideration the rational use of existing resources, promoting rapid and high-quality care. They will relate to their patients with empathy and assertiveness, taking their social and cultural surroundings into consideration and providing care that puts the physical and emotional wellbeing of the person first. Specialists will be trained to carry out basic clinical research and to apply essential concepts in undergraduate-level teaching.
