Campus

Coquimbo

Duration

3 years

General Description

The medical specialization in General Surgery aims to train and certify general surgeons to an excellent level. Graduates of this program will be able to generate scientific knowledge, optimize the use of technologies and contribute to clinical research.

Specialists in General Surgery will be capable of carrying out activities of health promotion, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, from adolescence to old age. They will work towards the common good, with a focus on people and their surroundings, and will be guided by ethical and Christian humanist principals that call for care of the mental and physical integrity of their patients.

General Surgeons will have the knowledge and skills necessary to address acute and elective surgical issues in ambulatory and hospital care environments, with varying degrees of complexity. They use the clinical and/or scientific method and methodological tools from biomedical and social sciences and research to aid in their decision-making, undertaking ongoing self-directed study.

Additionally, General Surgeons will be trained to carry out basic clinical research and to apply essential contexts to undergraduate-level teaching. They will be capable of leading healthcare teams, using management tools and working across multiple disciplines to overcome challenges and achieve objectives. They will take into consideration the rational use of existing resources, promoting rapid and high-quality care. They will relate to their patients with empathy and assertiveness, taking their social and cultural surroundings into consideration and providing care that puts the physical and emotional wellbeing of the person first.
