Duration

3 years

General Description

A specialist in Child and Juvenile Psychiatry is a medical professional with a solid theoretical, practical and ethical training who is able to contribute to preventing and treating illnesses prevalent in the child and adolescent population.

Within this field of medicine, residents will develop a bio-psycho-social vision of their patients’ problems. They will be trained in systemic interventions, including both the family system and the social surroundings.

This program allows participants to develop critical and analytical thinking in order to make the right decisions for the patient and their family as well as contributing to building multidisciplinary networks in mental health.

Child and Juvenile Psychiatrists are professionals capable of promoting wellbeing, preventing, diagnosing and treating illnesses and rehabilitating child and adult patients. They will be able to recognize the psycho-pathological risk factors that precipitate, prolong and aggravate mental illnesses, and will have the theoretical and practical knowledge to take an active role in clinical interventions at the individual, family and community level. They will work towards the common good, with a focus on people and their surroundings, and will be guided by ethical and Christian humanist principals that call for care of the mental and physical integrity of their patients.

Child and juvenile psychiatrists will be trained to address health problems in ambulatory and hospital care settings, at varying levels of complexity. They will apply the clinical and/or scientific method as well as methodological tools from the biomedical and social sciences and research, and will keep their knowledge up-to-date by undertaking ongoing, self-directed study. Additionally, they will be trained to carry out basic clinical research and to apply essential concepts for undergraduate-level teaching.

These professionals will also be trained to lead healthcare teams, using health management tools and working accross multiple disciplines to achieve goals and overcome challenges. They will take into consideration the rational use of existing resources rapid, high-quality care. They will relate to their patients with empathy and assertiveness, putting the physical and emotional wellbeing of children and adolescents and their families first and taking into consideration their social and cultural backgrounds.
