Profile of the Rector

Jorge Tabilo Álvarez is a Civil Industrial Engineer, having graduated from the Universidad Católica de Valparaíso and obtained an MSc in Industrial Engineering from New Mexico State University in the USA. Before being appointed as Rector of the Universidad Católica del Norte, he acted as Vice-Rector for Economic and Administrative Affairs at the same institution. He has also fulfilled other roles and responsibilities at UCN, including Director General of Research and Postgraduate Programs (2008-2009), Director of the Mining Business School (2008-2009), Member of the Board of Directors of CEDUC-UCN (2007 to present), Director of the Department of Systems and Computing Engineering (1998-2006) and Head of the Degree Program in Civil Engineering – Computing and I.T. (1983-1988).

Mr. Tabilo’s areas of academic interest include Production and Operations Management and Discrete Simulation. He has made numerous contributions to the development of undergraduate programs of study at UCN, supervising curriculum design for the degree program in Civil Industrial Engineering at the Antofagasta campus of what was then the Universidad del Norte (the program was founded at the Arica campus of the same institution), as well as the degrees in I.T. and Computing Engineering (1979), Civil Engineering – Computing and I.T. (1980) and Civil Industrial Engineering (1995). He also participated in the Committee for the creation of the Common Entry Program for Civil Engineering at UCN (1984).

Alongside these activities, Mr. Tabilo has formed part of the Accreditation Commission for degree programs at several other Chilean universities.

With regards to Postgraduate Programs, he has participated in the Project Formulation Commission for the Master’s program in Information Technology Engineering, the design and implementation of the Master’s in Mining Management, and the Formulation Commission for the Master’s in Industrial Engineering. He has also participated in the Commission for the joint doctoral program delivered by the Universidad Católica del Norte and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

In terms of undergraduate teaching, Jorge Tabilo Álvarez has taught courses in Simulation and Production Management II for the degree in Civil Industrial Engineering, as well as the Information Systems II course for the Civil Engineering – Computing and I.T. program.

In 1995 he was selected as the best academic at the Universidad Católica del Norte, a distinction awarded annually on the Anniversary of the institution.

Additionally, he has co-authored numerous publications on Technical Efficiency Analysis and its Relationship with Performance Evaluation Results in Chilean Universities, Simulation for Management and Situational Training for Emergencies, Empirical Evaluation of Autoregressive and Regenerative Methods for Analysis of Simulation Results and an Information System to support Exports, among many other topics.
